No matter what you do, never EVER give a dealer a down payment. It's blind robbery. If you have good credit, down payments are not required even if you're upside down on your current loan.

In the past you could hire a car buyer to go to the dealer and make a good/fair deal for you. Are there any pro dealers left?

This guy is pretty close on how to buy a new car from a dealership. These are my steps: 1st. Must have a good credit score and shop around for interest rate, many times car manufacturer have good deal and promotion. 2nd. Request information about the car you want to buy, do not go to the dealer for a driving test it negotiation, that won't tell much about the car and the price, better you rent one for a week and judge yourself with not rush. 3rd. Find the invoice price for the vehicle on Google, add taxes and fees, that will be the price to negotiate over the phone, better texting, make your offer to different dealers and ask if they can make it any better. 4th. And this last step is not to spend more then one hour at the dealer, tell the sales person that you a very busy person, that if they extend your purchasing time you won't buy anything and to tell the finance guy not to offer you any warranty or extra stuff unless the you are interested on it. Do not sit or take coffee from them, try to leave that place quick before they try to increase the price when add on.

Agree do the research! So much pricing info available online. Go in armed with information ! Disagree about not negotiating at dealership. I want to see and drive the exact car I'm buying. Yes now you are on their turf but no prob if you MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE DEAL. That is be willing to walk out at anytime. If you give them any hint you gotta have the car they will smell blood, You have given up all your power, and you're toast. Never trade in a car ! Trades are where dealers make a lot of money. Sell your own car. You almost always will do better. Agree get your own financing and just use that. From the time we sit down I give the sales person 1 hour....a little more generous than Mike. haha. After 30 mins I tell them move it along I got places to go. If we haven't cut a deal at the hour mark I walk. Tactic is to keep you there as long as possible and wear you down. Maintain control of the deal ! Lastly remember it's not up to the dealer to give you a great deal. It's up to you to get yourself a great deal. Business owners want to make as much as they can on their product. Can't blame them for that. If you don't like the terms you don't have to buy the car. Say no and walk out.

I don’t care about getting out of there in 30 mins. I’ll sit there for 5 hours if I can lower the price on the vehicle. This 30 mins or less bull crap is just him wanting people to come in there and be dumb pretty much. Take your time buying a car and negotiating. Make them come to you

I mention this as I'm in the market to do this and I want a very specific build and have not been able to find exactly what I want within a 500 mile radius of my location...and, no, it's not a Camaro. I already have that, but it is a Chevy.

Thanks for all of this useful info, but this entire industry should not exist. It's just another middle man to take more money. Why doesn't any other consumer item have this type of process? Because car dealerships lobbied the government in the 1920s and 30s to make it favorable for dealerships and illegal to buy direct from car manufacturers. The whole industry is so parasitic.

I’m so tired of the comparisons between car dealerships and mainstream retail businesses like grocery stores, Nike, Walmart, etc. Imagine if Nike told customers at the checkout, “We added mandatory paint protection to these shoes, so they're actually $150, although they were advertised online for $120.” Consumers would either negotiate or walk away. I’m sick of dealerships saying, “The price is the price; you wouldn’t negotiate anywhere else.” It’s precisely because you don’t encounter such deceptive practices elsewhere that this argument falls flat. Retail businesses like Nike operate with transparent pricing. If a price is listed online, that's what you pay at the register. You don’t suddenly find extra charges tacked on during checkout. This is why comparing negotiation at dealerships with buying from companies like Nike is fundamentally flawed. In traditional retail, the price transparency and consistency respect the consumer's ability to make informed choices, which starkly contrasts with the often opaque and frustrating dealership experience.

I walk in, tell them exactly what car I want, and give them the offer in writing. Then I head for the door. Most of the time they won't care. Sometimes they run after me asking me to come back. I have the money...I can go to anyone...pressure is on them. This game is fun for me to play as well. Let them sweat...

I'm looking at a used Highlander for sale at a dealership and I'll be paying cash. The dealer has a one price no haggle purchase price. Is there a work around those? The price is still a couple thousand higher than I want to pay. The dealership is 2 1/2 hours away, so I would haggle from home first, if they will not do their one price deal. Your advice?

Question: If you finance the purchase and then pay it all off at the first payment, are there loan origination fees that you would be paying for the transaction above and beyond if you just negotiate the OTD price of the car and then at the finance office tell them you will pay cash at the dealership?

Great vid! but what do you do when a dealership wont work with u on a price at all!! like not even come down a dollar lol or a few hundred bucks or a grand. I just experienced this the other day at a very big auto dealership here in Maryland. I went to look at a 2007 Toyota fj cruiser with 122,000 miles in great shape and the price for the suv is 16,988$ before taxes and tags. The salesperson and used car sales manager wouldn't play ball at all. I got up and walked out and said hey if you want to make a sale before the end of the month you have my contact info, It was frustrating. I have bought plenty of vehicles pre covid before 2020 and never had this happen. And F.Y.I i was a cash buyer ready to buy.

Cash = Boss Americans are reminded of this every payday, year after year and yet every American will walk into a dealership and let the dealer create the deal. We have the cash, we are boss, we create the deal. If the dealer does not want to follow the orders of our deal we fire the dealer and hire another one.

Btw, it’s called a “Vantage” score not “Advantage.” Also, your FICO scores are not restricted to being updated every month. This is not true. If it’s a bankcard score, it can change depending on what your credit card reports to the Credit Reporting agencies after your statement closes. There are also Auto FICO scores that you can also get. When you pull a new report from myfico it will update your various auto FICO scores as well as the others. Typically, this can be done once a month with a subscription but you can pay for an additional report from myfico anytime you want and it will update your score again. It really just depends on your credit behavior and when the lender reports it.

Mike at lexus for years now its price on sticker is the buy price. I am a full cash buyer and they would not deal at all. Asked a few times on different days as I was looking. One car I was considering did get lowered on the web page two days later. I asked again and said I'm looking and at this one why can't they price it the same amount off the other one was. Still nothing. Anyways I looked at six or so possible and did choice one. The price was fair as compared to all I researched but sure thought they could do a little bit off even a dollar just for being friendly. To add in I have bought cars there two decades so I am a great customer. Shed some light about this price is price thing if you can. Thank you
